Madame Butterfly
Recently, I became interested in Puccini's opera, Madama Butterfly, more specifically, in the aria of the second act "un bel di vedremo". I had heard the song before (I suppose everyone has), however, I had never paid attention to the lyrics or the background of the song. This week, I read about the plot of the opera, and the meaning of the aria I am speaking about. Now, I find myself unable to forget about the truth, that such a beautiful and magical song is an ode to childish hopes. I find myself unable to forget about Cio-Cio-san, and her unbreakable faith in Pinkerton's return. It is sad, it is crushing to have such an intense conviction, an ingrained certainty... I've thought about it, and the reason why it produces such an intense emotion in me, is that, in your lifetime, you should consider yourself fortunate if you achieve such level of conviction. We live in a world that is constantly reminding us of the uncertainty of everything. If I met someone who had
